Tom Baldwin's father, a police officer, was often drunk and behaved harshly to Tom. When he finally went into the hospital for the last time, Tom - knowing his father was dying - couldn't bring himself to visit the man. The illusion of his father forgives Tom, giving him a chance to come to terms with his past, and enjoy some time with the memory of his father.
