Reuniting with her mother
16 years after her mother's disappearance, Mariah is in disbelief when she opens the door to find her mother standing on the front steps. However, before they can reunite, Logan pushes Mariah inside to continue the conversation with Shanice by himself, but they are interrupted by Homeland Security, who takes Mariah's mother away in handcuffs.
Mariah spies on her father through the door cam and watches him to meet with her mother. When he returns, she confronts him for going to see her mother without telling her. Some kids at her school are saying that the 4400 are part of some kind of foreign invasion. She assumed her dad would talk to her about it, but he's actually avoiding it. Logan explains that it's complicated and that she can't go see her mother just yet, as it's simply not safe. However, later that night, Mariah sneaks out the house to see her mother at the hotel where the returnees are being kept.
Mariah reveals to her father that she went to go see her mother without his permission, and it didn't go as well as she hoped. Mariah didn't even know what to call her, only knowing Bridget as her mom, leaving Mariah in a state of uncertainty, which is why she needs the letter, believing it can give her answers.
After reading the letter, Mariah and Logan go to the hotel to see Shanice. She reads her mother's letter word-for-word about how she wasn't meant to be a mother. Shanice begins to cry as she tries to explain that she never meant for Logan to read that letter. She simply had a moment of weakness and never intended to leave them. And now that she's back, she's willing to be there for them. Mariah accepts her apology and runs into her mother's arms.
