What is the 4400?
The 4400 is about that exact number of individuals living in different times starting in the year 1946, who end up disappearing. What causes their disappearance is a comet, from which a beam of white light takes them away. Some of them have been gone for over fifty years; others have been gone for as little as three. When they return, the comet brings them to Highland Beach, where it stops, as cameramen and detectives watch. The comet appears to be a glowing ball of light. As everyone looks at it, the comet explodes as a shock wave, sending everybody back off their feet.
When getting up from the ground, the watchers see that the water is gone, and taking its place are thousands of people. In fact, they are the same 4400 people who went missing over time. When each of the 4400 tries to regain their life back, they realize that they do not remember where they have been for the years they were gone. They also discover that they possess supernatural abilities. They attempt to get their lives back together, only to find that they are being treated differently, most of the time as freaks.
Maia returned to the present with the rest of the returnees, now known as the 4400, though she was now alone in the world as her family and friends were long dead and gone. She remained in quarantine at NTAC, where she became the first 4400 to develop an ability; precognition, which strengthened and matured her childish nature, allowing herself to quickly adapt to her new reality. A foster family adopted Maia upon the 4400's release from quarantine, but she is ultimately returned when they have a hard time handling Maia's ability.
Maia, whose power was now revealed to the government, remained at NTAC, where she was subjected to tests and examinations as they wanted to duplicate her power. After seeing her mistreatment at the facility, Diana Skouris decides to take her home, where the two bond, and Diana creates a safe, stable home for her.
One year later, Maia is formally adopted by Diana, and is given the surname of Skouris, and claims her visions into the future have stopped, though they secretly continue but she now keeps her large number of visions written in her diary.
Eventually her visions are revealed to NTAC when she predicts Jordan Collier's assassination by Kyle Baldwin. Diana is increasingly protective of her, as people out in the world are afraid of 4400's because humanity is afraid of what it doesn't understand, though Maia accepts this. Maia has also bonded with April Skouris, her adoptive aunt, though they had an initial falling out when April used her ability to win money in gambling, though she forgave her.
Maia attended school at the 4400 Center, and formed friendships with students such as Amy Paspalis and Tyler Downing. Later, Maia, Tyler, Lindsey Hammond, Olivia and Duncan Germaine were targeted by agents of the future, who sought to alter the timeline further to avert the "Catastrophe". Despite their efforts, the children, including Maia, were sent back in time to live out their lives, but were returned when Diana's partner and friend, Tom Baldwin attempted suicide. Maia later left the center after Isabelle Tyler's rampage.
When promicin was distributed to the world, Diana sought to protect Maia by bringing her to Spain with her boyfriend (and according to Maia; her future fiancee) Ben. This ended when April went missing after taking promicin, forcing Diana to return, and Ben and Maia later followed. Maia currently lives in Seattle, normally sharing her visions with NTAC as they need guidance in the new chaotic world. Ultimately, she decided that Jordan Collier was a force for good when he had one of his followers cleanse one of the most polluted waterways in America, and left home to the newly-created Promise City and she alerted Collier to an attack by enhanced soldiers led by Captain Aquino.
Though she returned to her home, Collier thanked Maia for helping his cause and gave her access to Promise City to whenever she wants, even to be allowed to stay there.
Maia saw the transition of power in Seattle from the government to the Promicin Movement after the chaos caused by Danny Farrell's ability, and on watching Collier's speech upon seizing all of Seattle, told her mother that Collier was a good guy and "we're in charge now, it's better this way", revealing to Diana (and the viewers) that Maia is indeed one of Collier's many followers.
