Alex Messina was a Starzl Mutant, and was #38 on the list of all 123 people who had the mutation. Alex was a worker at a local bicycle shop and liked fixing broken bikes. Alex was asked by a new customer to come around the back of the shop to fix his bike, but since Alex's boss didn't allow him to leave during his shift, Alex asked the man to come by later. Before this happened, two agents from NTAC, Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris came to Alex and warned him that the unknown man was really Sergeant Darren Piersahl, a murderous enhanced soldier. Piersahl was secretly watching from his car across the street, and knowing he couldn't reach Alex, retreated to his base camp, saving Alex's life.
